Trumpet Literature

As a music performance major whose primary instrument is trumpet, finding pieces to play has always been challenging. Many pieces are available online via sites like the International Music Score Library Project. However, you may find that the music may contain errors and may feature interpretations that are inaccurate representations of the original material.
Just this past semester, I played an arrangement of Hummel’s Eb Trumpet Concerto from the site, and while I was able to learn the piece and perform it, the score had a few errors and was copied into a complicated key. You get what you pay for, after all.

There are many free resources online and bootleg copies of books, but they often have defects that make them hard to use. Above all, as a creative, I think it makes sense to legitimately support other creatives by purchasing their work.

I found a list of trumpet literature across various skill levels, and I will link them below to make it easy for you. I know I wish someone had done it for me.

Complete Methods

Arban: Complete Conservatory Method for Trumpet, ed. Goldman and Smith (C. Fischer)

Most people familiar with the Arban know the red cover version. It has been known as “The trumpeter’s bible” for over 150 years; this complete pedagogical method contains hundreds of exercises, beginning with basics and progressing to advanced compositions, including the author’s famous arrangement of Carnival in Venice. J. B. Arban discusses every aspect of playing — including articulation, tonguing, slurs, tone, and range — sharing the knowledge he acquired from many years of experience as a teacher and performer.

He covers all the instrument’s inherent difficulties and covers most musical questions.
The Paris Conservatory’s Committee on Music Study noted, “This work is rich in instructive advice, is based upon the best of fundamental principles, and omits not a single instructive point which might be needed for the development and gradual technical perfection of a player.” This edition features an Introduction and expert commentary by an instructor well-versed in the Arban Method. It is available as a paperback ($27.95) and a Kindle version you can download immediately ($9.00).

Saint-Jacome: Grand Method (C. Fischer)

Saint-Jacome’s Grand Method for Trumpet or Cornet is one of the two great pillars of trumpet methodology with Arban’s Complete Conservatory Method for Trumpet. The Grand Method has provided trumpet players with the necessary foundation for success on the instrument for generations since its publications in 1870.

This edition contains the recently discovered revisions by Claude Gordon. Gordon has added clarifications and some contemporary considerations yet is careful to retain the intended instruction of Saint-Jacome. Gordon has done this in the same spirit, as stated by Wynton Marsalis about Cornet or trumpet playing. “Understanding the historical development of the cornet/trumpet and the different styles and techniques from various periods is of utmost importance to anyone who wishes to have a comprehensive conception of playing.” In addition, this edition includes Duets and Studies by Saint-Jacome and Bousquet, all edited by the legendary bandmaster Edwin Franko Goldman. This edition is available for $42.00 as a paperback and 42.99 as a spiral-bound book.
